Inspiration for Come on Everybody, We Gotta Get it Together Now

This piece was inspired in contrast to the negative feelings surrounding this country’s economic depression. The image of two men joining hands is taken from an American Red Cross manual and juxtaposed with hand-crafted lettering to make the composition. The lettering became more interesting when, as the result of a “happy accident” ,when i originally drew the letters in reverse but was able to salvage elements of it in the final lettering.

Brett Whitacre, a former Chicagoan and resident of Lansing is an artist, professional musician and a repurposer of found materials. His unique style combines modern design and otherwise discarded materials that were found in alleyways and trash bins. With only the use of knife, tape, and spray paints he transforms these raw items into sharp and vibrant creations. Whether Brett is working with old storm windows, analog televisions, or vintage tweed suitcases, the end result displays his imagination and realization of his playful interest in the subject.

Brett, 34 years of age, began forming his current technique of art in 2001 upon relocating from his hometown of Belvidere Illinois to Chicago. He, living as a aspiring musician (broke) began collecting interesting objects picked from the alleys to make art. By 2005 he was dedicating all of his time aside from his job to creating artwork. Today Brett has learned all the possible pitfalls of the craft and is producing his most focused work.

Brett Whitacre’s work on display in this City Streets event displays storm window pieces from 2009-2010. Current images are viewable at brettwhitacre.net.
