Inspiration for Ripple
The inspiration for Ripple was sparked during leisurely strolls with my two young sons around our neighborhood in the Fall of 2010. We collected rich, vibrant autumn leaves along our walks and I was in awe of all the vivid and gorgeous colors nature had used to craft such beauty.
I began to think about how thankful I am in those quiet times with my boys, soaking in the beauty around me, and how each decision and action I make directly affects those I encounter, and more importantly, those I love. I thought about how what we do or how we care for one another sends vibrations, or ripples, into the world around us, touching even those from whom we may be very far removed. The decisions we make now will leave an everlasting mark on the future, our loved ones, and our environment.
Within Ripple I want to capture the simple beauty we are presented with every day, which should not be taken for granted, and the connection we hold as individuals to each other. More profoundly, the influence between parent and child.
Artist’s Biography
Sarah Merrill was raised in Grayling, a small town in northern Michigan. She became interested in art at a young age and realized as she grew that expressing herself through art was an essential practice in her life. She attended Michigan State University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 2001.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty and color found in nature, Sarah uses an organic approach to art-making, letting the piece evolve and guide her as it unfolds. Her media of choice are alcohol inks and India inks. She creates her images by blowing droplets of India ink across a background made with alcohol inks and adds finishing touches to each painting by using a toothpick.
Sarah happily resides in Lansing, Michigan with her husband, two sons, and two cats.
